Motor insurance cost soars by 72% Belfast Telegraph

A consumer watchdog yesterday launched a battle on behalf of motorists in
Northern Ireland in a bid to bring an end to the misery of ‘rip-off’ car
insurance.
The ‘four-pronged’ campaign to lower insurance costs, which have risen by 72%
on average in the last two years, is being |spearheaded by the Consumer
Council.
The action comes after a report by the body revealed drivers are being quoted
84% higher premiums compared to the rest of the UK — that’s £282 more on the
average policy.
Consumers in the province are also, on average, paying 43% more for third
party insurance. The campaign to reduce insurance costs involves:
A formal submission made today to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to enable it
to examine the car insurance market; An online ‘Lower Car Insurance’ petition launched for drivers to
pledge their support; Calls for the Department for Justice and the Assembly’s
