A new study from the Highway Loss Data Institute finds that car thieves gravitate toward stealing the Cadillac Escalade more than any other vehicle currently on the market.
After reviewing insurance claims filed between 2008 and 2010, the luxury sport utility vehicle was six times more likely to be stolen than the average vehicle, with overall theft losses outpacing the typical car by a factor of 10.
Another frequently pilfered vehicle type is the pickup truck, as the HLDI says the Ford F-250 had the second highest rate of theft claims.
Kimi Hazelbaker, senior vice president of HLDI, said anti-theft systems should not be construed as a fail safe measure.
"Immobilizers are a good deterrent against joy-riding teenagers, but professional thieves can easily haul away an SUV on a flatbed truck," said Hazelbaker. "A pickup that can't be driven away is still vulnerable to having tools and cargo snatched from its bed."
