We all have a tendency to moan about the NHS here in the UK, but not everyone around the world enjoys free health care and many travellers are finding this out when getting ill or injured abroad. In the majority of cases when the worst happens, people are sensible and have the appropriate travel insurance with medical cover, but what happens if you choose not take out a premium?

UK residents have a range of emergency medical care in a Public Hospital available to them around the world which fits into three categories. The first is the European Economic Area (EEA) which is made up of the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Provided you have a European Health Insurance Card, you will be entitled to free or cheaper medical treatment in a Public Hospital when visiting these countries. It is still important to ensure you have full medical cover in place to cover any situations not covered by these reciprocal agreements.

The second group consists of countries that engage in a reciprocal health care scheme with over forty countries; including Australia, New Zealand and Russia. Again UK residents are entitled to emergency treatment in these participating countries. The final group consists of over one hundred countries the UK has no schemes or agreements with and this is where travel insurance is especially important. This band of countries is made up of some of the most popular travel destinations in the world including the USA, Canada, Africa and the Far East. If you injure yourself or fall ill in these countries, you will be responsible for covering the cost of your treatment.

Evidence proves the importance of good travel insurance as the cost of treatments abroad continues to rise year on year. The average cost of a UK resident receiving medical treatment abroad is around ?2000, but this can be much higher depending on where you are visiting. The USA is the most expensive place to fall ill or get injured as the average hospital visit costs around ?6,000. Thailand and the Canary Islands both rank high in the most expensive countries with hospital visits costing around ?2,750 and ?2,500 respectively. In contrast, a hospital trip in Bulgaria will only cost you around ?500 which is obviously still a lot more than the low cost of a travel insurance premium.
