Is pet insurance a total rip off? Telegraph.co.uk (blog)
In my Pet Subjects column last weekend (in the Weekend Section of the Saturday Telegraph), I was asked about choosing pet insurance. I referred the reader to an excellent website that’s been designed to help pet owners choose between the different insurance policies that are available.
I’ve had a few emails since then, asking me for tips about which aspects of a policy should be examined critically. What should people look for in the small print, and where should they go if they have difficulties when it comes to making a claim for their pet?
The first thing to realise, which almost goes without saying, is that pet insurance policies vary hugely. If one scheme is much cheaper than another, it’s almost certainly going to offer far fewer benefits. That’s why it’s worth taking time to go over your selected policy in detail before handing over your credit card details.
Broadly speaking, there are three types of insurance cover.
