LIC's DK Mehrotra, IDBI's RM Malla in IIFCL chairman race
"The government has already conducted the interviews but there's no clarity on whether they want a fresh appointment for the position or they would extend Goel's term," one of the top PSU heads told ET.
Officials said that the government may decide within the next ten days on whether they want to extend Goel's term for another two years or look at a fresh appointment, where Goel could be considered as one of the candidates.
"They have interviewed many people but the name of the shortlisted candidate has been put on hold until the government decides whether it wants to exercise the option to extend Goel's term or not," another executive who was interviewed for the position said.
If the government decides to go in for a fresh appointment, the search committee would come up with the names of shortlisted candidates and finalise the name of the next chairman. The finance ministry would then recommend the name to Department of Personnel and Training for formal notification. The IIFCL chief's job would be challenging going ahead as it is pegged as a key lender to the battered infrastructure sector.
