LAWRENCE — When Nazario Esquea moved to the city, his impression was that Lawrence was a ghost town with boarded-up buildings and only a few stores occupying the downtown.
Gradually, he said, Hispanics mainly of Dominican descent began opening businesses despite their limited resources.
"We should be proud of our accomplishments," Esquea said at Friday's dinner celebrating the 12th annual Dominican Parade and Festival in Lawrence. This year's festival theme is "Dominicans are Big Leaguers, and More."
The annual parade which was scheduled for last Sunday and was canceled due to the weather; it will be held later.
In addition to Dominicans who have dominated the diamond — Rudy Hernandez, the fist Dominican to play in the American League, Rico Carty of the Braves, Boston Red Sox David Ortiz and Haverhill's Carlos Pena, of the Chicago Cubs — Lawrence has had its share of "big leaguers," Esquea said.
