'Huge increase' in claims
Insurance Council Chief Executive Chris Ryan said the insurance industry, already stretched by earthquake claims, is gearing up to deal with an influx in claims from disruption caused by the polar blast.
He said claims will range from collapsed structures, broken water pipes caused by freezing temperatures and claims for vehicles involved in accidents caused by the freezing conditions.
"Businesses forced to close as a result of the weather who have business insurance cover will also be looking to recoup their losses."
Ryan said insurers are also reporting significant travel insurance claims from stranded passengers.
Christchurch, Wellington, Dunedin and Queenstown Airports were all forced to close during the polar blast.
Christchurch getting back on feet
All the main roads on the flat in Christchurch are now clear, after round-the-clock work by diggers.
Christchurch buses are back in action apart from in the hill suburbs and all Canterbury health services are expected to return to normal today.
