IDER - Ider had its ground game operating in top gear Saturday
night.
The Hornets piled up 260 yards and five touchdowns rushing on 27
carries and defeated Valley Head 46-7 in the high school football
season opener for both squads.
The game marked the unveiling of the new Wayne C. Hardman
Stadium. The original was destroyed by a tornado last fall.
The new home bleachers seat about 1,800 fans, while the visiting
bleachers will accommodate 800. A new press box has been
constructed and a new scoreboard installed along with a new
25-second clock.
Cost of the project was about $750,000. Insurance paid about
half of that, and the remainder came out of the county school
system's Capital Purchase Fund, which can only be used for new
construction or repair or renovation of existing facilities.
Ider wasted little time building a big lead in its new home.
Senior running back Teague, Whitaker, a Class 2A all-state
honorable mention selection last season, scored the first touchdown
in the new stadium on a 6-yard run with 7:54 left in the first
quarter. He finished with six carries for 117 yards.
